In 1829/30, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy undertook a long voyage through Europe, which included stays in Scotland and Italy. His many and varied experiences inspired him to compose several compelling works. For example, the concert overture »The Hebrides« conveys the impression of an adventurous boat trip in heavy seas, while the »Italian Symphony« reflects in light-footed manner the Mediterranean »dolce vita«. Contrasting with this, Organ Concerto No. 1, written by the French composer Thierry Escaich in 1995, sets a fresh, contemporary accent.
