In 1610 the Mantuan court kapellmeister, Claudio Monteverdi, travelled to Rome. In his luggage he carried a book of sacred compositions fresh from the printing press, which was to single him out as a master of both the »old« and »new« styles. The »stile nuovo« is revealed in the voluminous vespers for Marian feast days with their rich vocal and instrumental setting. Monteverdi hoped that by dedicating the volume to Pope Paul V he secured himself a post in the Eternal City. Although this plan failed and Monteverdi was forced to return to Mantua empty-handed, the musical world owes one of the most significant liturgical works of the seventeenth century to this voyage: the »Marian Vespers«.
