In May 1836, the Lower Rhineland Music Festival in Düsseldorf saw the spectacular premiere of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy’s first oratorio. The work is a powerful narrative of the conversion of the Apostle, Paul, to Christianity and his missionary work. Taking as his model the cantatas and passions of Bach, Mendelssohn included in his »Paulus« any number of Protestant chorales, creating a concert work with a strongly religious message. Robert Schumann was deeply moved by the oratorio, writing: »Mendelssohn is the prophet of a beautiful future in which the work, and not the petty applause of the present, ennobles the artist«.
