No 1 Opening Concert: Christ’s Incarnation
Christ’s Incarnation
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart wrote an arrangement of Handel’s Messiah at the suggestion of the arts patron Gottfried Freiherr van Swieten. Under his patronage, Mozart conducted the work – with a German libretto and a new scoring –on March 6, 1789 in Vienna. A few weeks later, he travelled to Leipzig, where the choristers of St. Thomas surprised him by performing some of Bach’s motets. Mozart’s engagement with the compositions of Bach and Handel had a decisive influence on his late works. His arrangement of the Messiah goes much farther than an adaptation for practical reasons of performance: it can be seen as a personal interpretation of the work. The libretto is based largely on Bible texts – from the Old Testament books of the prophets and the Psalms, to be precise. The first section is all about the promise of Christ’s coming and birth and closes with the mention of his entry into Jerusalem. In England, it was customary to perform the Messiah during Advent even in Handel’s lifetime and this practice was continued in other countries.

No 2 Song recital
Richard Wagner was a child of Leipzig: he was born here 200 years ago on May 22, 1813, and although he grew up in Dresden, he returned to Leipzig as a schoolboy and student. From 1828, Wagner attended the schools of St. Nicholas and St. Thomas and, in the then cantor of St. Thomas, Christian Theodor Weinlig, found his first teacher of composition. It is therefore only logical that the Bachfest Leipzig should be dedicating a concert to the city’s famous son during this anniversary year of his birth. The programme will focus not on his famous stage works, but on his largely less well-known lieder. The renowned Swiss mezzo-soprano Maria Riccarda Wesseling, accompanied by pianist Peter Nilsson, will present piano lieder by Richard Wagner.
Maria Riccarda Wesseling (mezzo soprano), Peter Nilsson (piano)

Much wind for a great sound: Tour and presentation of organs from six centuries for families with children aged 8 and over (without English translation)
The largest and most versatile of all musical instruments – the organ – needs plenty of wind. Thanks to fascinating mechanics and pipes of all shapes and sizes, it turns wind into music. We will be taking a look inside a »glass« organ and hearing historic organs from six centuries, from the mediaeval »portative« and the organs of the Renaissance and Baroque right through to that great storyteller, the cinema organ. You will be hearing: organ model made of glass; Portativ (15th c., reconstruktion); organ positiv (Steffan Cuntz, Nürnberg 1610); organ(Gottfried Silbermann, Hilbersdorf 1724); cinema organ (M. Welte & Söhne, Freyburg 1931).
Veit Heller (tour guide), Sabine Heller (organ)
