Johann Sebastian Bach’s second year as Thomaskantor in Leipzig was almost entirely given up to chorales. For every Sunday and feast day, he composed a cantata based on an appropriate hymn. In doing so he worked closely with a librettist, whose identity we do not know, which lent the cycle great musical and poetic consistency. The chorale melody can always be heard in the opening and closing chorus, and is also occasionally hinted at in arias or recitatives. On this year’s Cantata Day at the Bach Festival you can hear ten chorale cantatas from the 1724/25 annual cycle, four of them performed in the evening concert by Al Ayre Español and Vozes del Ayre.
