Johann Sebastian Bach’s »opus ultimum« is the great Mass in B Minor, which the Thomaskantor completed just a few months before his death. The reasons why Bach, racked with illness, pushed ahead so persistently with completing this composition in a final spurt of creative activity, also including some of his earlier works in it, are largely obscure. Was it a commission from the world of Catholicism, or is the Mass »simply« his own, wholly personal artistic legacy with no concrete performance in view? Whatever the case, the result is a timeless composition, the musical form of which points far into the future.
