A memorable funeral service took place in Gera in 1636. The Count of Reuss, Henry the Younger, nicknamed »the Posthumous«, was carried to his grave to the sound of funeral music. The texts had been carefully chosen by the count himself, who had had them secretly inscribed on his coffin during his lifetime. The Dresden court kapellmeister Heinrich Schütz was commissioned to set these »Musikalische Exequien« to music; having been born in the Imperial County of Reuss he had been a close friend of Henry the Posthumous. Contrasting with this graveside music is Johann Sebastian Bach’s Easter cantata, »Christ lag in Todes Banden«, which is thought to have been written in 1707 in Mühlhausen.
