Chorale Cantatas

For the 300th anniverary: Bach’s cycle of chorale cantatas in ten days ...

In his second year as Thomaskantor in Leipzig (1724/25), Bach composed a new cantata for every Sunday and feast day, a total of 53 (preserved) works. Nearly all were based on famous hymns. Another thirteen chorale cantatas were added later.
All 66 cantatas of the annual cycle of chorale cantatas (including the additional pieces from the 1724/25 annual cycle) will be performed in a cycle in the original Bach locations in Leipzig, remarkably by Bach choirs from all over the world, in 16 concerts and 15 admittance-free sung church services. Never before has an entire annual cycle of cantatas been performed within the scope of one festival.

The 28 participating ensembles from 15 countries regularly perform Bach’s cantatas in their home countries – and have done so for decades in the case of some – and will be making the pilgrimage to Leipzig from five continents. Musical diversity, contagious enthusiasm and moving moments guaranteed!
True to the festival motto, »CHORal Total«, you too can actively participate in this unique cycle: at the start and end of each chorale cantata, all those present will sing together the hymn on which it is based.
You can even join our festival choir and, under the direction of Ton Koopman, perform a Bach cantata in St. Thomas’ Church.
