Concerts in the Summer Hall · 2024 Saison

Delighting the souls of enthusiasts – Bach’s Clavier-Übung and more in the Summer Hall

The four parts of the Clavier-Übung, which Johann Sebastian Bach had published in the years 1731 to 1741, contain pieces of all genres and compositional styles of his time. The word »clavier« however does not mean piano, but all instrumenrts with manuals, e. g. harpsichord, clavichord, portative organ and organ. The Clavier-Übung are not just exercises, but examples of Bach’s abilities as composer – the are milestone in music history. We have invited specialists like Peter Waldner from Austria and harpsichordist Elina Albach to play these works, For some of the works, Bach stipulates an organ with pedal: Thomasorganist Johannes Lang will play them in St. Thomas Church on the Bach organ.

Our concert in May will focus on the mandolin which was instrument of the year in 2023. It belongs to the lute instruments and will played by Caterina Lichtenberg, a well-known artist. During the Baroque period, the mandolin was a favourite during the 1750ies in Paris. The composer and flutist Jacques-Martin Hotteterre lived there the same time. His opus 1 »Principes de la flûte…« has remained a standard work for all flutists until today.

A warm welcome to our concerts in the Summer Hall!
